According to the definition of the OECD, a growth company is an enterprise which employs at least ten people at the beginning of the growth period and the number of employees increases by more than 20 per cent per year during the next three years. The group of enterprises with less than 10% of growth acts as a control group for different growth categories. This category includes all enterprises that have been included in the statistics during every year of the growth period, but that have increased their number of personnel by less than 10 per cent or have reduced their number of personnel during the growth period. The other growth categories indicate the average annual increase in the number of personnel during the growth period.
Note: The growth categories overlap! If an enterprise is in a higher growth category, it will also be included in the lower growth categories.
Municipality-based urban-rural typology:
In a municipality-based urban-rural typology, a municipality is regarded as an urban area if the number of population in its inner and outer core urban areas is higher than the number of rural population outside the sub-urban area. A municipality located in a sub-urban area is regarded as an urban area or a rural area close to an urban area on the basis of its urban and rural characteristics. Other municipalities are classified as rural areas close to urban areas, rural heartland areas and sparsely populated rural areas on the basis of their total land area and the number of population. Information about rural centres is included in the surrounding area category.
